Special Characters (Overlap)
Overlapping speech is marked by the special characters provided for this. It is no problem that bullets overlap because of two or more speakers speaking simultaneously. You can ‘open’ bullets by typing Esc+A, which will show the beginning and end of a bullet in milliseconds from the start of the recording. You can fine-tune bullets by editing them manually.
In CLAN overlap is not indicated by opening bracket, then closing bracket. Instead CLAN requires a more specific indication, to enable a more detailed analysis of the transcript.
- Click in the upper speaker line where the overlap begins
2. In the special characters window: double click on “top begin overlap”
3. Click in the upper speaker line where the overlap ends (or the end of the line)
4. In the special characters window: double click on “top end overlap”
5. Click in the lower speaker line where the overlap begins
6. In the special characters window: double click on “bottom begin overlap”
7. Click in the lower speaker line where the overlap ends
8. In the special characters window: double click on “bottom end overlap”
