09 – Special Characters

Why do you need this?

You will only need this if you work with Conversation Analysis. You are welcome to look at it even if you don’t work with CA – you might find characters you can use anyway.

Special Characters

Occasionally you may need to use certain characters that have been designated to represent certain aspects of the data (e.g. overlap, cut off) or of the transcription process (e.g. inability to hear what is said).

To find the Special Characters:

  1. Click on “Windows”
  2. Click on “Special Characters”
  3. Double click on a character to add it to the transcript.

The special character will be added where you last clicked/typed.

Done.
